AEE is pleased to announce the publication of the sixth edition of the Manual of Accreditation Standards for Adventure Programs. While the fifth edition added standards for therapeutic adventure programs, this sixth edition adds standards for programs that are part of an undergraduate or graduate program.

Over 1,600 copies of this manual have purchased by programs around the world since the first edition was published.

Bob Stremba (Fort Lewis College), and Christian Bisson (Plymouth State University), convened a meeting of representatives of degree-granting programs at the 2011 AEE conference to discuss the value of adding higher education standards. The example standards they authored became the foundation for this new edition.

These standards are included in recognition of the amount of academic degree program curricula designed to train adventure educators, scholars, and researchers at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the field of experiential education.

The sixth edition of the Manual of Accreditation Standards is a reflection of the talents, passion, and expertise of many people. Special recognition is also given to Jude Hirsch, Trey Fouche, Paul Smith, Denise Mitten and Steve Pace for their significant contributions.

In the thirty years since the first attempt to compile adventure program standards, countless people have contributed in many ways to the development of the accreditation standards we have today. The development of accreditation standards is an iterative process, and these standards will continue to evolve as the fields that use adventure programming grow and evolve.
