Journal of Experiential Education Call for Papers!

The Journal of Experiential Education (JEE) is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing refereed articles on experiential education in diverse contexts. The JEE provides a forum for the empirical and theoretical study of issues concerning experiential learning, program management and policies, educational, developmental, and health outcomes, teaching and facilitation, and research methodology. The Journal welcomes submissions from established and emerging scholars writing about experiential education in the context of outdoor adventure programming, service learning, environmental education, classroom instruction, mental and behavioral health, organizational settings, the creative arts, international travel, community programs, or others.

The use of experiential education as an approach to teaching and learning has grown rapidly across PK-12 schools and Schools of Education. These programs present different pedagogies such as community and place-based learning, environmental education, service learning, outdoor education, internships, immersive travel programs, and problem or project-based learning. This special issue seeks to gather robust examples of experiential education in PK-12 and teacher education spaces that move beyond traditional ideas and examples of experiential education. We also seek manuscripts that interpret the historical and theoretical foundations of experiential education in the context of PK-12 education. Images of possibilities and related outcomes will inform the field and encourage others to take up this work in their research and practice.
The aim of this issue is to examine the role of experience in democratic and progressive education in particular. We hope to extend the field of experiential education into PK-12 classrooms in meaningful ways that center experience as a “potentially powerful and transformational curriculum response” at a time when standardized ways of teaching and learning continue to be privileged in schools and classrooms (Roberts, 2014, p. 26). We are particularly interested in studies illustrating how experiential education can help address issues of access and equity in traditionally underserved communities. We invite empirical studies, analytical and conceptual pieces that examine experiential education through different and more complex lenses.
Topics to guide submissions include but are not limited to:
• Innovations in experiential education pedagogies in PK-12 and teacher education
• Robust discussions of the ways experiential education pedagogies are used in different grade levels and content areas
• Preparation of inservice and preservice teachers to integrate experiential education methods in their practice
• Criticality in experiential education: how experiential education in PK-12 and/or teacher education settings moves students toward action around equity, social justice, and community engagement
• Impact of experiential education pedagogies on PK-12 student learning
• Experiential education as a bridge between classroom and non-classroom settings
• Discussions examining the relationship between experiential education and democracy in the social and political climate of diverse global contexts
• Studies showing how experiential education works within or moves beyond traditional assessment and accountability measures
• Studies that reveal how institutions build capacity and support for experiential education
